Identify a CRITICAL ISSUE from the reading to write about and present Essay

Identify a CRITICAL ISSUE from the reading to write about and present arguments for and against it then take a position and logi - Essay Example Walker to aid women by testifying on the effect of the syndrome. However, the arguments by Dr. Walker are yet to gain broad and dependable scientific backing. All the alternative studies on the subject indicate otherwise. Therefore, the issue of battered child and women syndrome can only be accepted as an existing issue but not for the purposes it has been used. The issue can be addressed in a better way by enhancing the law to deal with such issues amicably, because the current situation discourages one vice and encourages another. Two wrongs can never make a right. Introduction Children and women alike have been involved in killing in the United States but justice rendered in the courts is debatable, especially to the victims’ side. Children have been convicted and found guilty of killing their parents but the courts both in first trial courts and appellate courts have considered four possible judgments: first and second-degree murder, manslaughter and acquittal on the self- defense rule. Generally, lighter sentences and even acquittal on account of self-defense dominate the judgments in all cases. In most cases, first-degree murder sentences have been reversed and lesser punitive sentences given to the defendants (Wilson, 2000). The lawyers from both sides of the divide have been making their cases in all the cases mentioned. In any case, justice is expected to be delivered to both sides. However, in all these cases, the victim is not alive to state their case whereas the perpetrators of the crimes are there to state their case. This implies that it is the prosecution case against the defense case. It can be concluded from the outcomes in most of the cases that the defense has been carrying the day in either getting lesser sentence or being acquitted altogether. Whether the decisions were based on truth or partial truth is speculative. However, does the reason of battered child or woman syndrome justify committing murder? (Malmquist, 2007) Although mur der is a subject of definition in law as it may have been applied in this case, this paper uses to refer to mere killing of one human being by the other. The arguments are both supportive of the verdicts and against the verdicts in the cases. The conclusion section gives a verdict of this paper. Pros In the first case, the Menendez boys killed their parents, and after it was found that although they were guilty of the action, they were subject of child abuse (psychosexual abuse) there was a mistrial in first trial because the jury tied two versus two on whether rule murder or manslaughter. Even though they were eventually judged for murder and given a life sentence, there was a reason why there was a mistrial. Their relationship with their parents was questionable, to the extent that they feared for their lives every minute that passed. In the second case, Jahnke was found guilty of murdering the father. However, because it was after a violent argument, the jury termed it voluntary manslaughter and not predetermined murder. Although his appeal on grounds of battered child was rejected the judgment had already factored in this aspect. In the third case, the jury found Sociz guilty of attempted manslaughter and later the boy was acquitted for what the judges termed as sympathy for child’

Jules Vernes A Journey to the Center of the Earth :: essays research papers

In the novel, A Journey to the Center of the Earth, author Jules Verne tells the fictitious story of three men and their adventures as they descend into the depths of the earth. The leading character in this expedition is a fifty-year-old German professor named Hardwigg. He is an uncle to the narrator, Henry (Harry), a simple Englishman. The other man is Hans, a serene Icelandic guide. Professor Hardwigg finds a piece of parchment that written in Runic in a book. Harry finds out before his uncle that it says there is a way to get into the center of the earth through a mountain (Mt. Sneffels) in Iceland. Harry is reluctant to tell his uncle the message because he is afraid his uncle will actually want to visit the center of the earth. He was right because the professor wanted to explore as soon as possible. They head off to Iceland, and, along the way, receive Hans as their guide. The journey to the mountain itself takes a while. They reach the entrance to the center, and from there, they head inside. Once in the dark labyrinths, they descend (this goes on for days). The three men then face difficulties: thirst, light, getting lost, injuries, and fatigue, were among them. They make many discoveries. They find that there’s a sea, with fish and sea monsters. They find forests, giant mushrooms, animals that look like dinosaurs, and even what seems to be giant human beings. The idea of writing this story came from a scientist who explored the crater of a certain mountain. Verne got the idea that maybe it would be possible to descend even further into the earth. Many of Verne’s â€Å"fantasy† stories have come true in the years following his death in the year 1905. A Journey to the Center of the Earth is farthest from reality. Even with the technology we have today, it would be impossible for one to descend into the earth. For one thing, we know now that the earth can’t be hollow because of extreme pressures and temperatures. People became interested in Verne’s stories during his time because though they were unrealistic, they were too interesting and entertaining to pass up. Some people even believed he had traveled to the many places that he wrote of. While checking into a hotel once, the woman told him to rest well in the room because he must be tired from his many adventures.

Make Probability Real

Probability plays a crucial and important role in many things: industries, recreation, etc. Let's see how many we can think of. I know that we will all be amazed at how much our every day life is influenced by probability. †¢ Identify at least one example of probability encountered in everyday life which has not previously been mentioned. I am the â€Å"chef† in the house and work most of my hours in the afternoon. As I am the one who is the most creative in the kitchen and the evening hours at work prevents me form cooking dinner during a normal time, the probability of me cooking and having dinner prepared before noon, to be heated up later is very high. If my family is to eat a home cooked meal, I am the one to create it. The probability is between 95-97%. †¢ †¢ Explain how probability is used in that situation. Probability is used in the above situation because nobody in my home can cook a homemade meal. They love to eat, but they are terrible in the kitchen. The only way that they will eat a home cooked meal in our home is if I cook it earlier in the day and they re-heat it at dinner time. If something had come up during the day, and I am unable to cook a meal, then the probability that anyone in the house would cook would be zero; because as I stated earlier I am the only cook in our home. †¢ †¢ Identify the type of probability your example best fits by explaining whether it is an independent event or dependent upon something else. This situation described could be either a dependent or independent event. In the case of a dependent event, I would be available during the day, with all of the ingredients to prepare the meal and nothing comes up during the day that would preclude me from cooking the meal. In the event that something came up, this would become an independent event because then I would not be available to cook because I was not at the house able to cook. The greater probability of me being available early in the da y is greater than me not being available to cook; because without me cooking my family would have to go out to eat and we are a family who loves to have a different home made creation daily.

The Weight Of Social Awareness - 1025 Words

Healing Through Design: The Weight of Social Awareness in Design Introduction Institutional facilities are intended to confine and monitor people who commit serious crimes. Their focus has always been to punish these individuals beyond the deprivation of their freedom and not much effort is put into treating these individuals and preparing them to get back into their community. Punishment is viewed as a way of discouraging other members of the community from committing crimes and reducing recidivism. Society often refers to prisoners as separate from their communities. Prisons serve as a physical remainder of this distinction and to reinforce it wired fences have been added to their design further isolating these individuals from their†¦show more content†¦Many have evaluated this problem and have come to the same conclusion: Locking them up isn’t enough. The public is clearly divided about youth crime issues. On one side are those who see youth as victims in need of protection. On the other side is a group who views young offenders as an enemy from whom adults need protection. If the punishment were limited to being deprived of one’s freedom the environment inside penal facilities would be similar to the outside world, giving the offenders both responsibilities and rewards. This would facilitate the readaptation process upon release. Keeping in mind that most young offenders don’t have an average life, providing one for them would help them learn their role within society. Rehabilitation should be the most important part of the incarceration process. In countries where the main emphasis is to rehabilitate recidivism rates are considerably lower, such as Norway with a 20% recidivism rate. The fact that people keep committing crimes serves to remind us of two things: 1) The System is broken. 2) We’re spending a lot of money on prisons. Once you add the costs of policing and courts the justice budget is $11 billion a year (http://www.prisonjustice.ca/downloads/behindbarsleaflet08.pdf). The problem of yo uth crime is not new. Film Production of a Thriller Essays - 2150 Words

Film Production of a Thriller The opening sequence of a new thriller, including the titles, aimed at a 15 or 18 certificate audience (approximately two minutes duration). SECTION ONE. We began the ball rolling, by researching into target audiences . To begin with we got information from the BFI (British Board of Film Classification), on the two film certificates 15 and 18. We finally chose the certificate that would allow us to manipulate audiences in the best possible way. In the end the final decision went with the 18 certificate , It allowed us more freedom of speech and we agreed it allowed us to use more conventions that are expected in a thriller. The 18 certificate allowed us to†¦show more content†¦This became a strong idea for us. We thought it would be a worthwhile piece of information if we sent letters off to institutes that were in a position to provide us with relevant information ( for example, how they tackle the thriller genre or a way of making a successful thriller movie). The information that was received from Granada followed the ’High Concept Model’ which is a ten point formula which film scholars use to make successful Hollywood films. With this in mind ,we could now contrast our ideas and see if the thriller film of ours follows that successful formula. That would add key connotational value for the audience, such as intertextual links that could keep the audience in a state of familiarity. We also looked at existing real media texts for their conventions and language to help identify key stereotypes of characters. We began by looking at ‘Se7en’ and the ‘Third man’. The key conventions were noted which included the titles, camera angles, key characters etc- the gothic lettering for instance in ’The Third Man’ that connotated possible violence, and the exaggerated camera angles used in ’Se7en’ to signify mental distortion and canted frames to represent a lack of balance.
